The Belief That Built a Precinct
Twenty-five years ago, the Gold Coast was a city defined by its coastline, its construction boom and its tourism industry. It was thriving, but it was also vulnerable. A city built on one speed is a city at risk.
What changed was a vision. A conviction held by a small group of leaders that the Gold Coast could become something far greater. That world-class health, research, education and innovation could take root here, creating a more resilient, more connected and more globally significant city.
That conviction became the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.
In this chapter of our 25th anniversary series, three of the precinct’s founding visionaries reflect on where it all began. Di Dixon, inaugural Director of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, Bryan Case, former City of Gold Coast projects manager, and Ned Pankhurst, Emeritus Professor at Griffith University, share the decisions, the partnerships and the long-term thinking that helped shape what the precinct has become.
Introducing their story is Kathy Kruger, who reported on that early vision as a young journalist 25 years ago and today remains part of the team delivering it.
