Queensland Academies for Heath Science - Where Potential Finds Purpose
What if a young person could discover a passion for science at school, study at university, build a research career and eventually help inspire the next generation, all within the same place?
That pathway already exists within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.
Queensland Academy for Health Sciences (QAHS) gives secondary students the opportunity to learn within an ecosystem where education, research and healthcare exist side by side, surrounded by people working at the forefront of health and medical science.
QAHS is a Years 10 to 12 selective-entry state high school, with the pathway beginning even earlier for some students through the Brilliant Futures Gold Coast program. Students can apply from Year 6 to participate in the program before progressing through to the Academy from Year 10.
In this story, Griffith University researchers Dr Antony McNamee and Professor Michael Simmonds reflect on the importance of mentorship, collaboration and creating opportunities for young people to see where a career in science could take them.
It is also a story that demonstrates those pathways in action. From Queensland Academy for Health Sciences student to Griffith University student, early career researcher and now lead investigator, all within the precinct.
As we celebrate 25 years of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, it is a powerful reminder that one of our greatest capabilities isn’t only attracting talent. It’s growing it.
